  3. 3. Do not forget minerals and water

When someone asks how to get better milk or better weight gain from cattle, the answer usually starts with the feed bucket, not with medicine. Here is a simple way to look at it.

1. Start with green fodder

Napier, maize and fresh grass should make up the bulk of the diet when they are available. They give fibre, which keeps the stomach working.

2. Add concentrate in measured amounts

Dry feed mixes with grains, bran and oilcake add energy and protein. Follow the amounts on the pack for the animal’s weight and stage. More is not better and sudden changes can upset the animal.

3. Do not forget minerals and water

  • A mineral or vitamin premix supports bone, milk and fertility.
  • Clean water should be available all day, especially for milking cows.
  • Store feed dry and off the floor, and throw out anything that smells musty.

If your animal is sick or milk drops suddenly, talk to your local vet. Feed helps, but it does not replace one.
